Christopher Columbus was an explorer. He came to America in 1492. The second Monday in October is called Columbus Day in the United States. Schools are closed on Columbus Day. Some people don’t have to go to work on that day.

Other towns and some states don’t have Columbus Day. On that day, they celebrate the Native Americans who lived in this land before Christopher Columbus came. These towns have parades and powwows. Powwows are Native American ceremonies that have song, dance, and food.
What Do You Think? How would you like to celebrate the second Monday in October?
