Eastern gray squirrels eat nuts and berries. They can find a lot of food in the summer and fall. What about in the winter? Snow covers the ground. Food is hard to find. Gray squirrels save extra nuts in the fall. They hide these nuts in many places. Then they find their food in the winter.

How do the squirrels find the nuts? They use their sense of smell. They use their memory, too. They remember where to dig. Gray squirrels do not find all the nuts they buried. The nuts they do not find might grow into trees.
