Impressive Ideas

An inventor thinks of new things to make. Look around you. Do you see a marker? A computer? A phone? People invented these things! They made observations. They noticed problems. Then they thought of a solution and built something new. Let’s take a look at two inventions!

In 1886 Josephine Cochrane invented the dishwasher. She observed that dishes would chip when people washed them. She had an idea! She wanted to build a machine that could safely wash dishes. She made compartments to hold plates and cups. Then she poured hot soapy water over the dishes. Problem solved!

In 1903 Mary Anderson invented windshield wipers. She was taking a ride in a trolley car. There was sleet on the windshield. The driver could not see. She had an idea! She made wiper arms out of wood and rubber. A driver could pull a lever inside the trolley car to clear the windshield. Problem solved!
