International Day of World’s Indigenous Peoples

August 9th is the Day of World’s Indigenous Peoples. Indigenous peoples are the first people who lived in any place.

These children live in Guatamala. The country is south of Mexico. About 6 million indigenous people live there. Many of the people there are poor. They don’t have good doctors. Other people are trying to help them.

These Maasai men live in Kenya and Tanzania in Africa. They raise cows. They move from place to place so that the cows have grass to eat. The Maasai wear colorful blankets. They have special songs and dances.

The Nenets peoples live near the Arctic Circle. It is very
cold there. They herd reindeer. They wear warm coats made of reindeer skin. They
build homes with reindeer skins, too.
