Meet Emmett Chappelle

This is Emmett Chappelle. He was a famous scientist. He also invented things. He won awards for his inventions.

Chappelle got many ideas for his inventions from fireflies. He used the parts that make fireflies glow to make a test. His test helps scientists find life in soil and water. Scientists can even use his test to study soil from Mars!

Chappelle also invented a way to help astronauts breathe in
space. Humans need oxygen to breathe. Plants help us breathe. In space, there
is not enough oxygen for humans to live. So, Chappelle sent plants to space.
Chappelle made many important inventions.
