Why Do We Vote in November?

Election Day in the United States is the first Tuesday of November. The first year people voted in November was 1845. Congress passed a law.

Before 1845, states had elections at different times. Some states voted early. Some voted late. Elections were confusing. So Congress thought people should all vote on one day.

Why was the
election in November? Many people worked on farms. They had to harvest their
fields. An election in spring would be a problem. Farmers planted then. In the
winter, it was hard to travel.

Many people went to church on Sunday. Farmers sold their crops on Wednesdays. So Tuesday was a good day to vote.

In some
states, Election Day is a holiday. In other states, people can take time off
from their jobs to vote. Many states let people vote early. They can vote by
mail.

No matter how
people vote, we think about November as the Election Day.

What Do You Think? Do you think Election Day should be a holiday for everyone in the United States? Why or why not?
