Attack on the United States Capitol Building

United States Capitol Building

Something scary happened in Washington, D.C., on January 6. People attacked the United States Capitol. That is where Congress works. Congress was meeting to accept and approve the votes from the states in the presidential election. The law says this is the last step before a new president takes office.

Donald Trump lost the election for president. Many more people voted for Joe Biden. But President Trump says he won. He spoke to his supporters. He told them to march to the Capitol. People marched. They are allowed to do that.

Then, many of them pushed into the Capitol building. They broke the law. They were violent. People in Congress had to go somewhere safe. Some people were hurt in the attack. Some were killed.

Police made the building safe again. Congress continued their work. Joe Biden will be our next president. Kamala Harris will be our next vice president.

In this country, we expect leaders to be peaceful when they lose elections. We expect them to let the next person do the job. President Trump lied to his followers about the election. Their actions caused harm. People are upset. People are scared. We will work together to make things better.

What Can You Do Talk to a grown-up. Tell them how you feel. Ask them questions. Think about ways you solve problems.
