May is Asian-Pacific Heritage Month. Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have done great things. Let’s celebrate!

Maya Lin is an artist and an architect. She designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. She was in college. She entered a contest. More than 1400 people had ideas. Her design won. The memorial is a black wall. It has the names of people who died in the Vietnam War.

Chawla was an astronaut and an engineer. She was the first Indian woman to be
in space. She flew on the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997. She was a robotic
specialist. She was on another flight in 2003. That shuttle crashed. Chawla and
the other crew members died.
