What’s Poppin?

Do you like popcorn? October is Popcorn Poppin’ Month!
Have you ever wondered how popcorn pops? Popcorn starts as little pieces called kernels.  Each kernel has a little bit of water inside.

You can celebrate Popcorn Poppin’ Month at home. Follow
these steps:

1) Put the popcorn kernels in a pan.

2) Mix the kernels with oil.

3) Cover the pan. Heat it on the stove.

4) Gently move the pan until the last kernel pops.

5) Enjoy!

How does that little kernel turn into a fluffy, white snack? The water inside the kernel gets hot. It turns to steam. The steam makes the hard shell crack open.  Now you have popcorn!

Popcorn cools off very quickly. You can add butter and salt. Then it is ready to eat! Popcorn is one of the oldest snacks. It is healthy, too.

What Do You Think? What other kinds of snacks do you like to eat?
