The Shortest Day of the Year

Winter is coming. It is colder outside. There are fewer hours of sunlight. When you wake up, is it dark outside? When students ride the school bus or walk to school, the sun is rising.

Earth tilts as it moves around the Sun. In the summer, the top half tilts toward the Sun. In the winter, it tilts away from the Sun. In the winter, less sunlight reaches Earth. There are fewer hours of sunlight.

Is it dark when your family eats dinner? December 21st is the first day of winter. It has the least amount of sunlight. Not for long. The next day there is more sunlight during the day. The days are getting “longer!”
