Penguins and Where They Live

Penguins are birds that swim. They do not fly. They eat shrimp and small fish. Penguins are black with white stomachs. The colors keep them safe from sharks and whales.

Penguins live right by the water. They usually live where it is cold. Penguins have thick skin with lots of fat under it. The fat keeps them warm.

Penguins are part of a system. The area where penguins live is called a rookery. A rookery gives them everything they need to live. It is a wide-open space where they build nests and raise their chicks.
What Do You Think? Penguins are always in groups. Why is a group of penguins on land called a waddle, but a group of penguins in the water is called a raft?
