Black History Month
February is Black History Month. Here are some Black women you should learn more about.

Bessie Coleman wanted to be a pilot. Schools in the United States would not teach a Black woman to fly a plane. Ms. Coleman learned to write and speak French. She went to school in France. She learned how to fly a plane. She could do tricks with the plane. Bessie Coleman was the first Black and Native American woman pilot.

Ruby Bridges and Barack Obama are looking at a painting. Ruby was in first grade in 1960. The painting shows U.S. Marshals walking Ruby to school. Ruby went to school in New Orleans. Ruby Bridges was the first Black child to go to an all-white school. in New Orleans Black and White children went to different schools. Ruby Bridges was all alone at her new school. She and her teacher were in a class by themselves. She ate lunch by herself. She never missed a day of school. Ruby Bridges was very brave.

In 2019 a lot of people started getting sick. The people were sick with a virus. A virus can spread from person to person. Doctors needed to protect people from getting sick. Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett knows a lot about viruses. She found a way to help people. She found a way to help people fight the sickness.
