What is a Voyaging Canoe?

Pacific islanders are known as voyagers. Voyagers are travelers. Voyagers are explorers. Traveling on the ocean is not easy. A long time ago, voyagers built special boats. They built double-hulled canoes. These boats are sturdy. These boats are strong. They could carry families and supplies.

Voyagers explored the Pacific Ocean. They traveled far. They spent many days and nights at sea. They discovered many islands. The area they explored is called Polynesia. Polynesia means many islands.

Polynesians were great navigators. They did not have maps. They studied the nature around them. They followed the stars. They used the Sun. They observed the Moon and the waves. These skills helped them find their way!
