A New Gate in Central Park

Central Park is a beautiful park. It is in New York City. It is surrounded by a low stone wall. It has many entryways. These are called gates. The gates were named in 1862. They are named for types of people like artists, farmers, and explorers.

This is the Stranger’s Gate. The Strangers’ Gate welcomes all immigrants and visitors to New York City.

In 2022, a new gate was named for the first time. This is the Gate of the Exonerated. Exonerated means someone is not guilty. The three men standing by the gate were exonerated. They are Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, and Raymond Santana.

In 1989, the men were teenagers. They were sent to jail for a crime. The crime happened in Central Park. They did not do it. They were exonerated. The gate honors them. The gate honors all innocent people.
