African American Heroes of the Revolutionary War

Black History Month is in February. It is a time to celebrate African Americans. Let’s look at some African American heroes of the Revolutionary War.

Salem Poor was an enslaved man. He bought his freedom. Then, he fought for his country’s freedom. He fought bravely in many battles.

Phillis Wheatley was one of American’s best poets. She wrote several poems in honor of George Washington. She wanted America to win its freedom. She hoped enslaved people would win theirs too.

Cyrus Bustill was an enslaved man. He bought his freedom. Then, he joined the Revolution. He baked bread to feed troops. After the American Revolution, he worked against enslavement.
