Winter Birds

Bird watching can be a fun activity. But when winter comes, some birds leave. They migrate to a warmer place. Some birds stay during the cold months. They can keep warm in the cold weather.

Winter birds have adaptations that help them stay warm. Winter birds use fat and feathers as insulation. In early fall, birds eat extra food to add fat to their body.

Winter birds have special behaviors to survive the cold. They shiver. Shivering creates body heat. Winter birds also fluff their feathers to keep warm. When the weather is cold, food is hard to find. Some winter birds store food. Winter birds do many things to survive the cold.
What Can You Do? Ask an adult to help you put bird seed out for the birds. Then, watch to see what birds visit you.
