Maria Telkes – Scientist known as the Sun Queen

Maria Telkes was born in 1900. She was a scientist. Telkes studied solar energy. Solar energy is using heat from the Sun to make energy. Maria Telkes thought of ways to use solar energy.

Maria Telkes invented things that use solar energy. One thing she invented is called a solar still. A solar still uses solar energy to make sea water drinkable. Solar stills are carried on lifeboats. Solar stills save lives.

Maria Telkes helped design the first solar home. It was heated by solar energy. Telkes was known as the ‘Sun Queen.’ She won awards for her work in solar energy.
