King Charles III’s Coronation

On May 6, 2023, King Charles III officially becomes king of the United Kingdom. This day is his coronation.  

Long ago kings and queens led the government. Today, other people lead the government. Kings still have duties. They give speeches. They meet with leaders.

The coronation is at Westminster Abbey. This is a church in London, England. It is hundreds of years old. Many kings and queens have been crowned there.

Charles will be crowned at the coronation. He will put on a heavy crown. It is called St. Edward’s Crown. It weighs as much as a brick. The crown is covered in gold. It has many jewels.  

At the ceremony, Charles will make promises. One is to make sure laws are followed. People in the United Kingdom will celebrate. They have a new king. People around the world will celebrate as well.
