Getting to Know Dolphins

Look at the dolphins. They look like fish. They have fins. Fins help them swim in water. But they are not fish. They are mammals [warm-blooded animals that have hair]. They breathe air. Dolphins breathe through a blowhole. It is on top of their head.

Dolphins live in groups called pods. Living in a pod helps them stay safe and hunt for food.
Dolphins are carnivores. This means they eat meat. They eat fish, squid, and other animals.

Dolphins make many sounds. They make clicks, whistles, and squeals. Some sounds are used to communicate. Some sounds help them “see.” This is called echolocation.
