Similar but Different: Reptiles and Amphibians

Turtles, snakes, and lizards are reptiles. Frogs, toads, and salamanders are amphibians. These animals are similar. They are both cold-blooded [having body temperature controlled by their surroundings]. They also both have backbones.

What’s the difference?

Amphibians live part of their lives in water. Adults lay eggs in water. The young are born with gills [structure for breathing in water]. They go through changes. They develop lungs [structure for breathing air]. They can live on land. But they still need water. They have smooth, wet skin.

Reptiles are born on land. They have lungs only. They breathe air. Reptiles have dry, scaly skin. Their skin protects them.
