The Montgomery Bus Boycott 

In December of 1955, Rosa Parks was on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Back then, Black people had to give their seats to White people. Rosa Parks was Black. She said no. She would not give up her seat. The driver called the police. They took Rosa Parks to jail.

Black people in Montgomery were mad. They were tired of unfair laws. They decided to stop riding the buses. This was called a boycott. The boycott went on for more than a year. Bus companies lost money. Finally, the law changed.

Rosa Parks was brave. She was a hero. But she was not the only hero of the bus boycott. Martin Luther King, Jr., was also a hero in Montgomery. He helped lead the boycott. He made speeches. He kept people going. He told people across the country what was happening in Montgomery.
