Where is the north pole?

Where is the north pole? The answer might seem easy. First, we have to ask another question. Which north pole? That’s right. There are two north poles! One is the geographic north pole. The other is the magnetic north pole. The geographic north pole is always in the same place. It’s at the top of Earth. In the middle of the Arctic Ocean.

The magnetic north pole moves. Why? Earth is a big magnet (an object that can pull some metals toward it). There are hot, liquid metals in the center of Earth. These metals make Earth’s magnetic field (an area around a magnet that you cannot see). These liquid metals are always moving. This means that Earth’s magnetic field is always moving.

The magnetic north pole moves about 10 km a year. Why do we need to know where it is? It is how map systems in phones and cars work.
What Do You Think? What is the difference between the two north poles?
