Will spring come early?

Groundhogs hibernate during winter.

It’s February 2nd. It’s Groundhog Day! Famous groundhogs are woken up from their winter sleep. Will they see their shadows? Will spring come early?

During winter groundhogs hibernate (spend the winter sleeping in a den or burrow). In winter, it is cold. There is less food for animals. Hibernating helps animals live through the winter.

Groundhogs eat grass, leaves, and flowers.

Groundhogs sleep while hibernating. Groundhogs come out of their burrows (a hole in the ground that animals live in). They do this in the spring. Then, they eat lots of food.

Groundhogs live in burrows.

Groundhogs mostly eat grass and leaves. They also eat flowers and berries. Sometimes, they eat insects. In the summer, they eat a lot of food. They get ready to hibernate again for the winter.
