Know That State: Kentucky

Every year a horse race takes place in May. Many people watch it. It is called the Kentucky Derby! The horses are all three years old. The riders are called jockeys.  

There are more things to do in Kentucky. Let’s check them out.

In Kentucky, you can visit Mammoth Cave. Caves are spaces underground. They form naturally. They are not made by people. Mammoth Cave has lots of caves joined together. It can be very dark. Eyeless fish and blind beetles live there.

Fort Knox is in Kentucky. This is a US Army base. A large amount of gold is stored at Fort Knox. The gold is kept in a strong locked building. Many other important items have been stored there. This includes the Declaration of Independence.

  • Kentucky became the 15th state in 1792.  

  • The Kentucky State Wild Animal is the Eastern gray squirrel.  

  • The Kentucky State Drink is milk. 

  • Kentucky’s nickname is the Bluegrass State.
