The Longest Day of the Year

In some countries in June, you can see the sun at nighttime!
Earth leans to the side as it moves around the sun. Days get different amounts of daylight. The day each year with the most daylight is a summer solstice.
In Iceland, people celebrate by dancing around a pole. The pole is decorated. It is called a maypole.

Stonehenge is in England. It is a circle of very large stones. Stonehenge was built thousands of years ago. People celebrate the summer solstice at Stonehenge. They watch the sun rise there. The sun makes a shadow right in the middle of Stonehenge.

Some countries have a winter solstice in June. This is the day each year with the least daylight. In Cusco, Peru, people celebrate this with Inti Raymi, or Sun Festival. People celebrate that days with more sun are coming soon. They act out a festival from hundreds of years ago.
