What Is the Census?

How many people live in the United States? The census counts people in the United States. We do this every ten years. Why do we count people?

The government gives money to help people. The census tells how many people live in each place. If a lot of people live in one place, that place gets more money. Some money goes to schools. The money helps students learn! The money helps after-school programs, too. Some schools need money to make healthy meals.
