Why Do We Vote in November?

Election Day in the United States is the first Tuesday of November. The first year people voted in November was 1845. Congress passed a law.

Why was the election in November? Many people worked on farms. They had to harvest their fields. An election in spring would be a problem. Farmers planted then. In the winter, it was hard to travel.

Many people went to church on Sunday. Farmers sold their crops on Wednesdays. So Tuesday was a good day to vote.
